Senior Lead Science Technician

Location: Greenwich
Salary/Grade: SO2
Working Hours: Monday Friday 8 AM 4 PM 41 weeks per year (Term Time + 2 weeks)
Contract Type: Full-Time

GSL Education is seeking an experienced Senior Lead Science Technician to join a secondary school in Greenwich. This role requires a proactive individual to manage the science technical team, ensuring smooth operations within the department. The successful candidate will oversee the preparation of practicals, health and safety procedures, and resource management while supporting both teachers and technicians.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate health and safety procedures in line with CLEAPPS and COSHH regulations.
  • Manage and coordinate the daily workload of the technical team.
  • Standardise chemical and apparatus management across the department.
  • Organise the safe disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Support the Director of Science with departmental health and safety meetings.
  • Conduct in-department audits and inspections, providing guidance to the technical team.
  • Train new staff members on the department s health and safety policies.
  • Assist the Director of Science in maintaining the departmental budget.
  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of specialist resources and projects.
  • Set annual appraisal targets and oversee performance management for the technical staff.
  • Manage technical orders and ensure teachers provide sufficient detail in their requests.

General Technical Duties:

  • Prepare, issue, and maintain resources for use in classrooms and laboratories.
  • Assist in setting up demonstrations and practical assessments.
  • Maintain and repair laboratory equipment and keep an accurate log of damages.
  • Ensure stock levels of chemicals and materials are maintained and replenished as required.
  • Provide first aid primarily within the science department and across the school when needed.
  • Accompany students on science-related school trips.
  • Assist with the care, maintenance, and security of laboratories and work areas.

Requirements:

  • Experience managing a team within a science department.
  • Knowledge of CLEAPPS, COSHH, and relevant health and safety procedures.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to provide technical support and guidance to staff and students.
  • First aid qualification or willingness to undergo training.
