Business 'turning to temps and contractors'
09/06/2008(17:18)

Businesses could be turning to the services of temporary workers and contractors in the face of economic uncertainty, surveys suggest.

Research from both the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG shows outsourcing and non-permanent workers are currently more popular.

A lack of certainty on future business growth could explain the phenomenon, website Contractor Calculator has said.

REC chief executive Kevin Green said: "Every week, 1.3 million temporary workers are keeping business in the UK moving. Temp and contract work provides vital opportunities for workers."

He added the credit crunch was continuing to slow permanent job growth and added the proposed EU Agency Workers Directive should not "impact on the viability of the UK temp model".

The REC is the trade body representing the recruitment industry and has more than 8,000 corporate members.
